Major step for Tomtebo strand - Approved detailed plan!

On Wednesday, November 15th, the Building Committee unanimously applauded as they passed the detailed plan for Tomtebo Strand. This marks a significant step forward for Tomtebo Strand and its ambition to become a forward-thinking and sustainable district welcoming the future. The next step is adoption by the municipal council. Read the full press release below.

"Between Lake Nydala and the University Area in Umeå, a forward-thinking district with a focus on sustainability is being planned. It will accommodate 3,000 homes and 70,000 square meters for businesses, retail, and services. The Building Committee has now approved the detailed plan for Tomtebo Strand. The next step is adoption by the municipal council.

–This is one of the largest plans we have worked on in Umeå," says Mikael Berglund (S), chairman of the Building Committee. "Through this plan, we create important conditions for many to live a sustainable life for generations. The district is also a key piece in connecting Tomtebo with the University City.

With Consideration for Nature and Sustainable Transport
The plan enables about 3,000 homes and 70,000 square meters of business space, with buildings mainly 3-6 stories high. The detailed plan takes into account the importance of Kolbäcken and the green corridor, prioritizes sustainable modes of transport, and minimizes through traffic. A central route for public transport will connect the area and make it easily accessible.

After feedback received during the review in spring 2022, the plan has been adjusted to improve the traffic situation, especially around Tomtebovägen and Tomtebo roundabout. Key changes include expanding the road area at Tomtebo roundabout, widening the area around Kolbäcken, and adjusting the placement of Bäckbron to protect the natural flow of the stream. A previously planned square at Tomtebovägen is now planned as a park.

Successful Collaboration between the Municipality and Building Actors
–The collaboration with the building actors and municipal companies has been a success factor in making the plan this good. As some parts related to sustainable building and social sustainability cannot be regulated in the detailed plan, the quality program will play a crucial role in transforming the plan's good intentions into reality," says Robert Axebro (C), vice-chairman of the Building Committee.
Now that the Building Committee has approved the detailed plan, it is forwarded to the municipal council for adoption. The development of Tomtebo Strand will occur in stages over approximately 15 years. The first steps include infrastructure work and the new fire station in 2024, followed by residential construction from 2025.
